Saint Cuthbert’s Ginger Treats traces its origins back to the dark ages of mid 2009 when my sister and were making jelly for our Church’s Christmas Sale. It was at that time that we invented the receipt for what is now our Famous Ginger Jelly. It was by far the best seller at the sale and people have been approaching us begging us to make more ever since.

This persistent demand for the Ginger Jelly was one of two motivating factors behind my decision to start this business. The other was my invention of the Original Ginger Chutney over the winter and the resulting invitation to sell it at a charity sale.

Eventually I started thinking hey! If people like my ginger products this much I should sell them on the internet and here we are.

Oh! Who is Saint Cuthbert? What does he have to do with Ginger Jelly?

Cuthbert of Lindisfarne (AD 634-687) was a monk, missionary, and bishop in Northern England. Famous for his piety, charity for the poor, and healing miracles, upon his death Cuthbert was accounted a saint. When the Vikings attacked the monastery at Lindisfarne in AD 875 the monks fled bringing with them the relics of St. Cuthbert. The wandering of the monks went on for more than a hundred years. They would settle down for a while then have to flee once more. When the cart carrying his relics got stuck near the ford at Durham, the monks took this as a sign that Cuthbert had found his resting place. On Sept. 4 999 his relics were transferred to a shrine in the newly built church on the site of what is now Durham cathedral.

It just so happens that my birthday is Sept. 4. So, when I was thinking about a name for my ginger products, I thought about monks and their traditional skills as herbalists and fruit preservers, then I thought of St. Cuthbert and here we are!
